Full Description

The OS 1st edn 25in map (1889) (1) shows a flight of steps descending the coastal cliff to the beach. They may have formed part of the designed landscape associated with Encombe, to which the site is linked with a network of paths. The map marks the location as Freshwater Steps. The OS 1st edn 1in map (c 1811) (2) and tithe map (c 1840) (3) name it Freshwater.
