Full Description

The New Pile Pier forming the N side of the entrance to Weymouth harbour is shown on the OS 1st edn 25in map (1883) (1). This was probably built c 1860 as an improvement on an earlier Pile Pier (2).

Weymouth Pier (also known as Commercial Pier and originally 'Pile Pier') has a history as both a pleasure pier and a commercial pier and is thought to have been first built in around 1812. It was largely rebuilt and extended between 1859 and 1860. A cargo stage was also added in 1877 and a passenger landing stage for the Great Western Railway in about 1888. The Pavilion Theatre was constructed in 1908. During alterations to Weymouth Harbour in the 1930s, a new 1300 feet concrete pier was built to replace the existing timber structure. It was opened by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) on July 13th 1933. The Pavilion Theatre burnt down in 1954 and was replaced in 1961. Land adjacent to the Pier was later reclaimed to provide car parking and other facilities for the theatre and cross-Channel car ferries (operational since 1973). <3>
