Full Description

Cunnington's Ms refers to this barrow as just opposite the entrance gate to the Middleton property which must be at the lodges (SY 647904) according to Miss Middleton. The lodges are approximately 2 3/4 miles from Dorchester and the excavation probably applies to one of a group of barrows at this location, possibly 'A' - SY 64689032. <1>

A barrow close to the south side of the Bridport road and 1 3/4 miles (incorrect distance) from Dorchester was opened by Mr. Sivewright and Capt. Acland in 1896. A contracted inhumation was found in a grave, 5 1/2ft deep and much burnt soil and a stag's horn pick. In Dorset County Museum. <2>

Grinsell and RCHM also mention that the grave was "covered by a large flint cairn"; the latter authority also specifically associates the excavation to barrow 'A'- SY 64689032.

Six round barrows situated south of the Bridport road, about 2 1/2 miles from Dorchester; 'A' - (119) - SY 64689032. Bowl barrow, 59 ft diameter and 8 ft high according to RCHM. Listed by Grinsell as a bell barrow 63 ft diameter x 8 ft high with berm 13 ft wide and ditch 6 ins deep. Large cavity in top. <4> <7>

'A'. SY 64689032. Bowl barrow, diameter 21.0 metres, height 2.2 metres. There is no visible evidence of a berm or a ditch. Not ploughed; overgrown. 'A', 'C', 'D', 'E', 'F'. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <8>
