Summary

Site of a possible hengiform enclosure or bowl barrow of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age origin visible as a cropmarked mound and outer bank on aerial photographs. It forms part of a wider group of round barrows running in an irregular east-west line on the crest of a ridge immediately south of the A35.

Full Description

Three bowl barrows near the third milestone from milestone from Dorchester were examined by Grinsell in 1954. 'C' - SY 64389032. Bowl barrow, 20 paces diameter and 4 ft high. <1>

'C' - (116) - SY 64389032. Bowl (?) barrow, ploughed and only 2 1/2 ft high. <3>

SY 643904. Three round barrows south of Hart Hill Plantation. Scheduled. (See SY 69 SW 72 for probable excavation of some of these
barrows). <4>

'C'. SY 64389031. Bowl barrow, diameter 25.0 metres approximately, height 1.0 metres. Ploughed; no visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <5>

A bowl barrow, part of a barrow cemetery. In 1981 the Ordnance Survey recorded it as a mound 25 metres in diameter and 1 metre high, with no visible ditch.

Site of a probable Bronze Age bowl barrow visible as a cropmarked mound and outer bank on aerial photographs. The outer bank is approximately 50m in diameter. Alternatively it could be a possible hengiform enclosure of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age origin. It forms part of a wider group of round barrows running in an irregular east-west line on the crest of a ridge immediately south of the A35 (Roman road RR 4f). <9-11>
