Summary

Two pits marked 'Old Chalk Pit' are depicted at this location on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map. They are part of a line of pits along a natural chalk scarp. They are considered to be post medieval and are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and 1970.

Full Description

Two 'Old Chalk Pit's are marked at this location on the OS 1st Edition Map. They are part of a linear series of pits along a natural chalk scarp. They are considered to be post medieval and are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1945, 46 and 1970 (1-3). The site was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. They are still extant on the most recent Google Earth imagery, the southernmost pit having been partially plough-levelled and visible as a cropmark.
