Summary

A large post medieval to modern sand and gravel pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the north east of Crossways. The area of extraction has been digitally plotted to its extent in the 1940s, but now forms part of Moreton Pit.

Full Description

A large post medieval to modern sand and gravel pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the north east of Crossways. The area of extraction has been digitally plotted to its extent in the 1940s. (1-2) The southern part of the pit now forms part of Moreton Pit, and the northern area is now covered by a caravan park. (3) The pit measured approximately 570 m by 550 m. ( 1-2) This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
