A post medieval to modern sand and gravel pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the north of Dick O' Th' Banks Road, Crossways. The site of the pit is now partially built over and partially under a sports field. The pit measured approximately 395 m by 125 m. At least six sub-square shafts are visible on the 1940s photographs ranged over the centre of the pit. (1-2) This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
