Full Description
Extensive areas of shell holes and bare soil associated with Second World War military training on East Holme Range are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (1-4). Linear bands of holes and bare soil associated with firing practice can be seen running for up to 2.5 km across the landscape from Povingtion Hill and Whiteway Hill northwards. They are associated with a number of small structures (usually in lines of three) which are either firing points or tagrets (e.g.MDO31780-1 and MDO31783-6). The features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project they are no longer visible on recent Google Earth images.
