An 'Old Quarry' is marked at this location on the OS 1st edition map, it is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the north of Maiden's Grave Gate, Povington Hill. The underlying geology is chalk, it is therefore considered likely to be a post medieval chalk pit.

An 'Old Quarry' is marked at this location on the OS 1st edition map, it is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the north of Maiden's Grave Gate, Povington Hill (1). The underlying geology is chalk, it is therefore considered likely to be a post medieval chalk pit. The site is obscured by trees on recent Google Earth imagery; it was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
