Summary

A detached house built in the early eighteenth century but incorporating parts of an earlier building. The house is thought to have been built for the Gilbert family who were quarry owners, and one of whom, Thomas Gilbert, designed St George's church, Reforne. The building has walls of Portland Stone, some squared and coursed, and slate-covered roof.

Full Description

No 4 Fortuneswell (Queen Anne House). C 18 but unlikely to be before 1714 (the death of Queen Anne). The best house of its period on Portland, it is two-storeyed with a basement and attic. A small cottage of sub-Medieval origin is incorporated to the rear. <1-2>

'(28) House, No. 4, with basement and attic, is of the early 18th century; it is symmetrically designed with central entrance hall and a small kitchen wing at the back. The entrance doorway and ground-floor windows have rusticated architraves and rusticated arched heads; the first-floor windows have plain architraves and aprons. One of the rooms is panelled in two heights with two niches in the upper range of panelling. (Plan, p. 257.)'
