Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A large transmitting station on a site covering around 190 acres, acquired by the BBC in 1939. The station, known as Overseas Extension 3 (OSE3), came into service on 16 February 1941. During the war the site was a target for aerial attack, and bomb craters can be seen nearby. Notable features of the site are the transmitter halls, separated by blast walls, and an aerial system comprising 15 masts of different heights supporting 29 arrays which could transmit around the world. The four original transmitters were replaced in 1963, and a completely new installation in 1982. The final transmission from the site was on 29 October 2011.
