Monument record MDO31463 - Post medieval gravel pits, Challow Hill, Corfe Castle

A group of pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the lower south-west slope of Challow Hill, Corfe Castle. They are considered likely to be the remains of post medieval gravel pits.

A post medieval gravel pit is shown on the First Edition OS Map (1), located on the lower south-west slopes of Challow Hill, Corfe Castle. A pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs at this location (2-3). Several other pits are visible further to the east and are considered likely to be the remains of additional gravel extraction pits. These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
