Full Description
A group of pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of New Mills Heath, Corfe Castle (1). They are considered likely to be the remains of post medieval clay pits shown here on the First and Second Edition OS maps (2-3). These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

A clay pit is preserved as a pond and is shown as old clay pits on the 1888 O.S. map. On this map the pits and spoil heaps extend to the south and east indicating that 112248-50 are not Bronze Age round barrows but the result of clay working. The site is not shown on William Woodward’s map of 1775. (See fig 15). Visited 17/7/1992)
