Summary

A series of low linear banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on the northwest facing slope of Knowle Hill, Church Knowle. The parallel features are considered to be fragments of a field system of probable late prehistoric or Roman origin.

Full Description

Field systems - taken from air photos. Jan-March 1949. (Area centred SY 93338223). <1>

Field system - faint, almost negligible. Traces of lynchets. <2>

The indicated area lies on a very steep NW-facing hill-slope and is covered in thicket and gorse. The field system was not evident but probably still survives under the vegetation cover. <3>

A series of low linear banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on the northwest facing slope of Knowle Hill, Church Knowle. The parallel features are considered to be fragments of a field system of probable late prehistoric or Roman origin <4>. The features are under scrub and no longer visible on the most recent Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck NMP.
