Monument record MDO3120 - Ditch on the Dorchester Ring Main, Winterborne Monkton

A steep-sided feature recorded during archaeological work in 1992 on a new ring main around Dorchester. One piece of Romano-British pottery was recovered from the filling of this feature, which was interpreted as most likely to be a ditch of probable Roman date.

A cut 5.4m wide and 1.2m deep observed in section in the pipe trench. The nature of the filling suggested gradual accumulation with evidence of occasional collapses of the sides. Interpreted as a ditch, as it seemed too regular to have been a chalk pit and there was no evidence of structures within it.
