Full Description
Three areas of possibly late post medieval to modern quarrying are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1945 to the south east of Leeson Park. The quarries are situated on Limestone. The earthworks comprise: two large pits with an area of small pits in between them. The earthworks are visible over an area measuring approximately 240 m by 80 m. (1) These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

<2> Papworth M, 1994, Eastington, Acton, Westwood, Wilkswood, New Barn, Corfe Castle Estate, Wessex Region, 61 (Unpublished document). SWX1388.
Three quarry shafts/adits are shown on maps and aerial photographs on the north side of Verney Farm. The 1901 O.S. shows an adit at SZ01007815. By 1928 O.S. this adit has closed and an adit has been opened at SZ01107616. This adit had closed by 1946 when the RAF aerial photograph CPE/UK/1821 3394 shows an adit opened further east at SZ01127806. Quarry buildings and a shaft are shown on the 1960 O.S. and presumably the quarry was still in operation but it would have closed after 1963 when the government health and safety inspectors closed all the underground workings (R.Saville pers. Comm.)
