Summary

A group of rectilinear structures, trackways and earthworks are visible on aerial photographs of fields to the east of Holton Heath, situated close to Wareham Road. They are considered likely to be the remains of a Second World War Light Anti Aircraft Battery associated with the Royal Naval Cordite Factory on Holton Heath (MDO8224).

Full Description

Site of a Light Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery situiated close to Wareham Road where it passes the Roayal Naval Cordite Factory at Holton Heath. It was operational between 1942-3, when it was manned by troops from the 448th Battalion of the 84th Regiment. The emplacement was installed with a single 40mm gun mounted on a Mark II platform. There are no traces of the structure, which is overgrown, although there is a rubble mound at the site. <1>

These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. This site is not visible on the most recent Google Earth imagery.
