Monument record MDO30640 - Later prehistoric settlement or barrow cemetery, Tolpuddle

A possible later prehistoric settlement is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of 1997 to the west of Tolpuddle. The possible settlement consists of four circular enclosures which may be the remains of roundhouses. An alternative explanation is that they are the remains of round barrows. They are located on rising ground and fairly large in size.

consists of four circular enclosures which may be the remains of roundhouses. An alternative explanation is that they are the remains of round barrows. They are located on rising ground and fairly large in size, measuring between 15 m and 35 m in diameter. The largest feature has a possible opening to the north. (1-4) The ring ditches are within an area of small pits (see MDO30641) and are are located immediately to the west of an area of field boundaries (see MDO30639), which may be associated with them, if they are interpreted as the remains of a settlement. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
