It is considered likely to be the remains of the post medieval clay pit shown here on the First Edition OS Map (2). This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. Earthworks associated with this extraction are still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial images available to the project.
