Summary

Large round barrow, 55m in diameter. Aerial photographs suggest it has as many as four concentric ditches. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Full Description

SY 69388750. Probable composite round barrow with two concentric ditches seen by Grinsell from Golf Club House in 1954 and visible on air photographs. <1>

A rapid examination of air photography shows this probable round barrow, of Prehistoric or Roman date, visible as a cropmark of two or three concentric ring ditches, the outermost having an entrance facing west. <2>

Large round barrow, 55m in diameter. Aaerial photographs <3> suggest it has as many as four concentric ditches. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Destroyed, said to have contained nearly 2000 cartloads of soil. Two primary inhumations, parts of antlers and two grooved bronze daggers 4 foot higher up. All apparently SE of centre. (Grinsell).

Bowl N of Came Farm, 50 paces in diam. Large round barrow seen from the Golf Clubhouse by L V Grinsell in 1954, confirmed from air photo SY6987/2 in DoE Library suggesting a composite barrow with two concentric ditches. Perhaps site of Winterborne Came 38 (Grinsell) from which 2,000 cart loads of stones were removed in the mid-19th century.
