Monument record MDO30304 - Late prehistoric or historic trackways, South Heath , East Stoke

Please read our .

Summary

A group of trackways are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs of the northern part of South Heath, East Stoke. They are considered likely to be associated with post medieval extractive activities in this area, however their close proximity to a late prehistoric barrow cemetery (MDO7701-05 & MDO30236-41), means that an earlier date for these features cannot be ruled out either.

Full Description

A group of trackways are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs of the northern part of South Heath, East Stoke (1-5). They are considered likely to be associated with post medieval extractive activities in this area, however their close proximity to a Late prehistoric barrow cemetery (MDO7701-05 & MDO30236-41), means that an earlier date for these features cannot be ruled out either. These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. They are still partially visible on the most comprehensive aerial images available to the project, although most have since been destroyed by modern sand and gravel quarrying.
