A modern gravel pit is visible as earthwork pits and spoil heaps on aerial photographs of South Heath taken in 1946 (1). It is one of several gravel extraction sites in this area. These features were plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. They are still partially visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial images available to the project, although now disused and heavily obscured by scrub.
