Full Description

A number of sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the backfill of a pipe trench close to the earthworks of the shrunken village of Southover. The pottery is mostly unglazed body sherds, with one sherd of glazed ware, and part of the slashed handle of a 13th century jug. (1)

Medieval sherds from a sunken village site at Southover, Frampton ; SY 617950. The earthworks, marked on the O.S. maps as 'British Settlement', on the south side of the track from Southover to Nottonn, are doubtless the remains of a former extent of Southover. In May I noticed that a trench had been dug and filled recently, presumably for a pipe-line, in the vicinity of the earthworks, from the gate beside the last cottages in the village, across the re-entrant, to the narrow copse bordering the track on the other side. Examination of the refilled trench produced several sherds of mediaeval pottery (1956.17), mostly side fragments of unglazed ware, with one scrap of glazed ware, and part of the slashed handle of a 13th century jug.
