Full Description

<1> Batt, A, 1998, Whitcombe Stable Yard, Dorchester, Dorset. Archaeological Field Evaluation (Unpublished document). SDO14327.

'In each trench a sequence of Valley Gravel and colluvial deposits was recorded. The colluvial deposits predominantly comprise flinty, non-calcareous, dark brown silty clay loams. In trench 1 one sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from the colluvium indicating that at least part of the sequence dates from the Roman period or later. No archaeological features were recorded within, below or cut through the colluvium.

The occurrence of remnant Valley Gravels and non-calcareous colluvium adds to the number of similar sequences recorded in other dry valleys around Dorchester and summarised by the landscape survey for the Maiden Castle Project (Staines in Sharples 1991, fig. 8).'
