Monument record MDO29693 - Late Saxon pit, St Peter's Church, Shaftesbury

A large pit, cut by the south wall of the undercroft of St Peter's Church and containing a large quantity of possibly tenth/early eleventh century pottery was excavated in 1977.

The Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group excavated a large pit in the undercroft of St Peter's Church, Shaftesbury before new floors were laid in 1976. The pit was about two metres wide with vertical sides and at least 1.1m deep. It was cut by the south wall of the undercroft of St Peter's Church, which has been dated to the sixteenth century. The fill was homogenous and contained a large quantity of pre-conquest pottery. (1-4)

185 sherds of pottery were recovered, including three stamped sherds. This pottery assemblage has a suggested tenth or early eleventh century date. (3-4)
