Summary

A Second World War boundary bank, or defensive bank, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s in an area now covered by housing at the western end of Hengistbury Head. There is a break in the centre of the bank where a road passes through. Anti-tank blocks are positioned in this break (see MDO28906). The bank was probably associated with the defences around the Chain Home radar site (see MD28870) or RAF Southbourne (see MWX1164).

Full Description

A Second World War boundary bank, or defensive bank, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s in an area now covered by housing at the western end of Hengistbury Head. There is a break in the centre of the bank where a road passes through. Anti-tank blocks are positioned in this break (see MDO28906). The bank extends from north to south for a distance of 650 m, then turns to the south east for a distance of 155 m. The bank was probably associated with the defences around the Chain Home radar site (see MD28870) or RAF Southbourne (see MWX1164). (1-2) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
