Full Description
A Second World War coastal battery is visible as a structure on aerial photographs of 1945 to the south of Southbourne Coast Road, Hengistbury Head The battery consisted of two 5.5 inch naval guns and may have formed an outlying part of the defences around the Chain Home radar station on Hengistbury Head. The battery was operational by 1941 and was armed until at least September 1944. It was manned by 172 Battery of 554 Coast Regiment (EHA record 1486160).
