Full Description
A circular mound, approximately 13.9m in diameter, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs south of Sandford Lane (1). It is of uncertain date and function. It is possible it could be the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. A hollow in its southern half may be the result of later excavation or looting of the mound. Alternatively it could be associated with post medieval or modern extractive activities; a brick yard, clay and gravel pits just to the north of this feature at Sandford Bridge are shown on the 1st Edition OS map (2). This features is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project (3), the area now being under plantation. This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
