Monument record MDO28676 - Second World War bomb craters, Drove Island, Studland

A large area of Second World war bomb craters are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 around Drove Island and to the north in Brand's Bay.

A large area of Second World war bomb craters are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 around Drove Island and to the north in Brand's Bay. The craters are visible as sub-circular depressions over an area measuring approximately 760 m by 775 m. The bomb craters measure between 3 m and 9 m in diameter. (1-2) This site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (3) Extensive, dense, areas of bomb craters are also located to the east (see MDO28677-81 and MWX827). This area was used for army training exercises and bomb disposal during the Second World War. (4) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
