Full Description

Second World War anti-tank blocks are visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s on the Promenade to the south of Southbourne Coast Road. The blocks are arranged in two parallel curving lines, with three blocks to the north of the centre and two blocks to the south west and three blocks to the south east. (1) Anti-tank blocks, made of reinforced concrete, were one of the coastal crust defence measures used to protect vulnerable areas during the Second World War. The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (2) Military buildings and structures are situated to the north and south of the anti-tank cubes (see MDO28606-9). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
