Full Description

A completely perforated lower stone of a Wessex type quern found by Lt. H Fullard in Oct 1941 whilst stationed at West Knighton. The
quern, together with a sherd of blackish gritty ware of IA 'B', 'C', or RB, was found in a trench 2ft 6in deep in a hutted camp (now pasture) 300yds south of the church and 20yds west of the road. It is c. 12" diameter and 41/2" thick, and of sandstone. A similar type of quern was found at Glastonbury Lake village and dated before c. AD 70, and the introduction of this type is associated with IA `B` culture.

The siting of this find is accepted from authy 2. The site falls within a grass field. No visible evidence of IA/RB habitation was found in this field or its vicinity during field investigation. The finder, Lt Fullard, could not be traced. <4>

'(27) West Knighton (SY 78 NW). Occupation Debris has been found S. of the village (73278735). A quern-stone of Wessex type and a sherd of Iron Age 'C' or Roman date come from trenching in 1941 in an army camp W. of the road to Broadmayne about 200 ft. above sea level (Dorset Procs. LXXIV (1952), 100).'
