Full Description

A section of Second World War beach scaffolding is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 on the beach at Southbourne. The section measures approximately 20 m and lies to the south of Southbourne Coast Road. It is visible as three parallel rows of posts. Beach scaffolding was constructed of wire held by two lines of tubular steel scaffolding braced from behind by steel struts. The three rows of posts visible on the photographs probably show a collapsed section of scaffolding. (1) The scaffolding was arranged in lines along the front of the beach to impede landing craft and was removed immediately after the war. (2) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
