Full Description

About SY 72308708. A Samian cup, from 27, was found by Mr E.R Sykes in 1930 at his house, Littlemayne, whilst planting trees in the field to the SW of the biggest building near the three stones belonging to the stone circle (SY 78 NW 24). A fragment of samian ware was also found. the handle of an RB beaker was found in 1936 at about the same spot. Both now in Dorset Co. Museum; Acc Nos 1952.13.1 and 1952.59.1 respectively. There is no indication here of a permanment R B occupation site. Earthworks to the west of Littlemayne suggest by their form, that they are associated with the Md. Manor. <1>

The Samian cup was seen in the Dorset Co Museum. Mr E.R Sykes is deceased and no further information regarding the site of these finds was obtained during field investigation. The siting agrees with the topographical description given. Situated in a plantation. <2>

'Sites (26) and (27) are on the edge of Reading Beds overlying Upper Chalk. (26) LITTLE MAYNE FARM (SY 78 NW). Occupational Debris has been found near the farmhouse (72308708). A late 1st-century samian cup and other Roman sherds (in D.C.M.) were found in 1930 and 1936 in tree-planting S.W. of the house above the 200 ft. contour (Dorset Procs. LXXIV (1952), 99).'
