Full Description

Second World War beach scaffolding is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 along the beach front from Bournemouth to Boscombe. The beach defences extend from Alum Chine to Boscombe Chine. Small gaps are visible in the scaffolding measuring between 5 m and 32 m. The wider gaps may be the result of partial removal of the scaffolding in the immediate post war period. (1-7) Beach scaffolding was constructed of wire held by two lines of tubular steel scaffolding braced from behind by steel struts. The scaffolding was arranged in lines along the front of the beach to impede landing craft and was completely removed immediately after the war. (8-10) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
