Find Spot record MDO28584 - Verwood Pottery wasters, Dewlands Way, Verwood

Please read our .

Summary

A possible sand pit and pottery wasters were recorded during an evaluation in Dewlands Way, Verwood in 1994-95. The features were located within close vicinity of Verwood kiln 10 (MDO6203) a pottery kiln which was in production during the 19th century. The collection of pottery, though consisting largely of undiagnostic wasters, could be dated to the first half of the 18th century, which does not correspond to the known dates of the adjacent kiln MDO6203. The excavators thought this could indicate either that the kiln was in use earlier than had been thought, or that another, as yet unidentified, kiln is situated in the vicinity. The excavators thought the first explanation the most likely.
