Full Description
In October 1930, H. P. Smith excavated a section through the Badbury-Hamworthy Roman road in the back garden of a bungalow called 'Alma', south of Carter's Avenue. In this area, the road was still visible as an earthwork, but was being destroyed by house building. The section revealed a road about 28 feet wide comprising a thin layer of 'rich black soil, full of decayed rootlets, stems of grass, heath, bracken, etc', which is either the old ground surface or the remains of an initial turf stack seen in other sections through this road. Above this was a layer of yellow clayey sand, followed by a layer of yellowish brown shingle and sand topped with a layer of small white flint gravel. The ditch on the western side was about three feet wide and eight inches deep. The eastern ditch was disturbed. (1)
