Summary

A stone-lined cess pit of eighteenth century date was found behind Rogers' Almshouses, West Street, Poole during excavations in 1974. The lining was of reused stone including a number of medieval architectural fragments.

Full Description

A stone-lined cess pit of eighteenth century date was found to the rear of Rogers' Almshouses during excavations in 1974. It measured 2.25m by 2.0m and 1.3m deep. The stone lining was six courses high and was constructed from reused limestone ashlar, with some chalk blocks and 24 limestone architectural fragments of medieval date. The fragments included pieces of carved sculptures, stone panel and mullions and other mouldings, which must have come from an ecclesiastical or high status secular building. (1)
