Full Description

(Centred at SY 55459434) Field systems plotted from air photographs. <1>

A grass covered area with fairly well pronounced field banks and lynchets forming irregular enclosures of Iron Age/Romano-British type. Visible on AP RAF/CPE/UK 2431 4152. <2>

There are seven or eight prominent stepped platforms, some near rectangular on a N facing slope covering about one acre. They are bounded by a S hedge and formerly extended uphill. Form and situation strongly suggest native Iron Age/Romano-British origins. Visited June1970 when under rough pasture. <3>

ST (should be SY) 553943. Settlement E of Brow Copse. <4>

SY 55369432. Well preserved earthworks of settlement as described byAuthy 3. One small very coarse pot-sherd found on surface could be Romano-British or medieval. A hollow way leading south from Eggardon Hill Farm appears to be in part related to nearby 'Celtic' field boundaries. <5>

The site of a deserted settlement of uncertain date is visible as low earthworks to the east of Brow Copse. The site, which has been scheduled may be of Iron Age/RB date although a later medieval origin is possible. The earthwork platforms are visible on aerial photographs. <6-7>
