Monument record MDO2819 - Lime Kiln at Bason Barn, Up Cerne

Please read our .

Summary

A lime kiln recorded as ‘limekiln’ on the second edition (1900-1902) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who could find no trace of the kiln structure. The earthworks of a small quarry are visible at this location on 1940s aerial photographs. This is recorded as a quarry on the OS 1st Edition map, as is the lime kiln, recorded by the letters LK. A small rectangular building is also visible on 1940s aerial photographs, which may be the lime kiln. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

The earthworks of a small quarry are visible at this location on 1940s aerial photographs (2). This is recorded as a quarry on the OS 1st Edition map, as is the lime kiln, recorded by the letters LK (3). A small rectangular building is also visible on 1940s aerial photographs, which may be the lime kiln. The lime kiln is recorded on both the OS 1st and 2nd Edition maps (3, 4). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

The quarry is still visible on current Google Earth imagery. The earlier building, possibly the lime kiln, appears to have been replaced by a larger building (5).
