Full Description

SZ 00829046: Excavations carried out north of St James' Church in 1973 produced pottery and food refuse dating from the 13th century until the 18th century. It is thought, due to the close proximity to the church, that this site may represent a priests' house or oratory. <1>

Excavations to the north of St James's Close undertaken by Poole Museum in 1974 revealed three lengths of wall footing made from unmortared chalk, limestone and sandstone. These wall footings were sealed by modern demolition rubble and were founded on a bed of yellow-brown gravel which contained a small amount of 13th-14th century pottery and some intrusive 18th century sherds. The full plan of this structure was not revealed. The excavator ascribed a medieval date to these footings. <2>
