Full Description

An early Roman oven or kiln was recorded during excavations by Wessex Archaeology on the former James Brothers site, Blandford Road, Hamworthy in 2008-9.The small keyhole shaped kiln/oven measured 1.6m along its north-west to south-east axis and 0.45m on its northeast to south-west axis. It survived to a depth of 0.16m, the deepest rounded component of the feature lay to the northwest. The southern portion had previously been disturbed during machine evaluation trenching. The fired clay kiln lining was moderately thick and was concentrated at the northern ‘bowl’ end of the feature. An episode of utilisation, containing pottery fragments overlay this lining and was sealed by a layer of sand and briquetage fragments. A final thin charcoal layer formed a final occupation layer. Pottery recovered from this feature included black burnished ware dating from AD 120 onwards.
