Full Description

A watching brief carried out by AC archaeology during redevelopment of the site to the rear of 142-146 Blandford Road, Hamworthy in January 2010 revealed a layer of gravel in the corner of the site which was interpreted as the remains of a Roman road.

A layer of gravel 100 mm thick was found immediately below the topsoil. It overlay a 100 mm thick layer of yellowish-brown redeposited natural sand and a 250 mm thick dark grey to black humic sand with thin lenses of bleached sand, which may represent turves or a buried soil. No dating evidence was found. The full width of the gravel layer was not revealed, but the exposed portion suggested that it was aligned roughly NW-SE.

No flanking ditches to this possible road was found, though a small ditch running NW-SE was found about 10 m to the south.
