Full Description

A watching brief undertaken by Gifford and Partners on the Dolphin Quays site in 2001 revealed parts of an earlier quay wall. This was constructed from dressed limestone blocks measuring about 0.6 m wide and between 0.5-1.0 m long and packed with clay. The eastern part was composed of rough concrete and limestone blocks. It survived only intermittently across the site. (1)

The position of this wall identifies it as the sea wall constructed after 1851 and before 1888 on map evidence. (1) (2)

It had been replaced by 1902 by a new east quay. (3)
