Full Description

<1> Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1986, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1985, 172-173 (Serial). SDO85.

'Site 18 lies at SY55409560, about 200 m north of Woolcombe farmhouse. Mrs Dinah Austin found a scatter of medieval pottery here some few years ago. The possibility of further settlement could not be ruled out, and accordingly resistivity surveys were carried out in the area, with inconclusive results. Two trial trenchyes were dug, as sub-site VIII. There was no evidence of buildings, but ambiguous evidence of a ridge and furrow system was recorded. If these were indeed ridges, they are roughly parallel to some very slight, badly eroded strip lynchets observed in the sloping part of the field to the west (Site 25). A few abraded medieval and post-medieval sherds were found, which would be consistent with ploughing and manuring in these periods.'

'18 SY 55409548 Scatter of medieval pottery found. D. M. Austin, pers. comm.'
