Full Description

A large extractive pit is visible on White Sheet Hill on 1940s aerial photographs (2).

The feature is elongated and irregular in form, up to 282m long and up to 130m wide. The feature straddles both sides of an un-metalled road leading north from White Sheet Hill. The OS 1st Edition map records the main area of the feature as an old gravel pit, whilst the southern part is recorded as gravel pit (presumably extant at that time) (1). There may have been some expansion of the northwest and southeast sides of the feature by 1947 (1 and 2).

The site is partly open ground and part dense tree cover on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is not visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
