Full Description

A large gravel pit straddling both sides of the road at Row Hill is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (2).

The feature is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map where it shows the pit on the south side of the road as an 'old gravel pit' and the pit on the north side of the road as 'gravel pit'; presumably indicating its current use at that time (1). Both pits are irregular in form, the one to the south being up to 114.5m long by up to 74m wide, the one to the north being up to 75m long by 99m wide. The pit to the south appears slightly shrunken in extent by 1946; this may be through loss of definition reflecting long disuse by this time (1 and 2).

Current Google Earth imagery shows that the site remains open heath on the north side of the road at Row Hill and scrubby tree cover on the south side. The feature is not clearly visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
