Summary

A church, now demolished, on a site next to and south of the present church, which was built in 1849. Historic documents mention the church of Tingledene' in 1291 and a 'chapel of Tincledene' in 1316. The foundations of the former church were observed during grave digging in 1950.

Full Description

The church or chapel of Tincleton, said Hutchins (1774) "is a small fabric, having on the south side a small aisle, the burial place of the Baynards of Cliff". In 1849 a new church was built on an adjoining site a little further north. The 'chapel of Tincledene' is mentioned in 1316. <1>

A few years ago (circa 1950) the foundation of the old church were discovered whilst digging a grave in the churchyard. (a) The grave, which was pointed out by Mr. Harvey, lies about 5.0m. North from the central point of a level platform at SY 77589179, where the grass is less luxurious than the surrounding area. <2>

'The church of Tingledene' is mentioned in 1291 and again as 'the chapel of Tincledene' in 1316. <5>
