Summary

The church of Holy Cross Abbey was designed by Charles Francis Hansom and built between 1847 and 1851. It is constructed from red brick in Flemish bond in the Early English style with two naves in parallel for monastic and lay use. Each nave has a steeply pitched slate roof and there is a bell tower surmounted by a tall pyramidal roof as the south-wset corner of the nuns' nave. On the north side of the lay church is an aisle with a lean-to roof of shallower pitch. The stained glass was executed in 1850 by John Hardman, Junior of Birmingham. Now a craft centre.
