Summary

The remains of a medieval market cross of 15th-century date. Of stone (Lias), the cross consists of a square base and the lower part of a roughly square stem, standing about 5ft high. The shaft has beaded angles and on the west face are the weathered remains of figures standing on a corbelled projection.

Full Description

The village or market cross once had a calvary of several tiers of steps, which was removed about the year 1780 as being an obstruction. The socket and shaft were re-erected in the same position. <2>

Description in T.21 correct except that the shaft is 1.3m high and is set in a socket stone 1.0m square which is sunk into the road at almost ground level. Graphical material omitted. <4>

‘Stone Cross. At road junction in middle of village, the village cross stands, much worn, approximately 5ft high with small square base. At apex of stump, a metal spike protrudes with hole in the top. Marred somewhat by the awkward placing of telegraph pole and wires. 597977.’

'(3) MARKET CROSS at the road-junction in the middle of the village consists of a square base and the lower part of a roughly square stem, the whole standing about 5 ft. high. The shaft has beaded angles and on the W. face are the much-weathered remains of figures standing on a corbelled projection. It is probably of 15th-century date. '
