Full Description

Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1992, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1991, 168 (Serial). SDO91.

‘STAGG’S FOLLY ENGINEER’S TIP A37 ROAD IMPROVEMENT, SYDLING ST. NICHOLAS.

A watching brief was carried out during September 1991 to monitor the stripping of topsoil from a field east of the A37 centred on ST60950210. The area stripped was to be used as the engineer’s tip where earth removed during road widening could be dumped.

The A37 at this point is presumed to follow the course of a Roman road, although its presence was not detected. The collection of surface finds contained 27 prehistoric flint flakes, and a further 6 flakes were found in association with an area of chalk rubble which appeared to be a natural feature. A detailed report of the observations made during the watching brief will be deposited with the County Sites and Monuments record.’
